Position Summary
After appropriate training, certification, and competency provided and/or verified by Total Safety Services will perform the duty of a Safety Attendant at industrial customer sites or Total Safety locations in one or more of the following areas: Confined Space, Fire Watch, Bottle Watch, Atmospheric Monitoring and Flagging/Spotting. This position also serves purpose as a subject matter expert (SME) to the position and shall be expected to engage workers both in the field and shop to train, mentor, and review employee knowledge and supporting documentation. At times, dependent on work availability the Safety Attendant may not have an assigned project to attend and then shall be shop based review, offer suggestion and work with HSE leadership to revise and write at regular intervals all supporting documentation as directed by leadership.
Specific Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Understands TSS’s responsibility to the employee to train, mentor, deem competent, and be held accountable to all roles and responsibilities
- Follow suite with the TSS Short Service Employee Program if required
- Complete all TSS assigned orientations and training
- Complete all client assigned orientations and training as required to access client locations
- Review, be knowledgeable, and accountable to all associated TSS Policy, Procedure, Standards, and expectations set forth for the role
- Review, be knowledgeable, and accountable to all associated client Policy, Procedure, Standards, and expectations set forth to access and work on a client property
- Conduct hazard identification, control measures, and documentation daily
- Effectively understand PPE requirements and utilize all as required
- Obtains as required and reviews entire permit at job site, identifies any mistakes, ensures that mistakes are corrected. Sets up the job per procedures for work being performed and ensures hazards are identified and controls in place
- Knows who to contact in case of emergency, where the nearest eyewash and safety showers are located, and emergency meeting and muster locations
- Knowledgeable to TSS and Client emergency response plans and their assigned role, expectation, and responsibility
- Ensures that proper equipment needed for job is in place. (e.g., vest, meters, radios, air horn, barricade tape or breathing air barricades and tags; fire extinguisher, charged water hose with nozzle, horn, fire blankets or burlap to cover drains, PPE)
- Follows all steps required before allowing work per guidelines and procedures specific to work being performed. Ensured that all workers have on the PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) specified on the permit
- Follows all procedures while work is in progress. Keeps visual and/or radio communication with crew. Observes work conditions and maintains awareness of anything that could endanger the workers
- Conducts job completion routine and completes all documentation per procedure
- Gathers equipment and notifies customer that job is complete

- Will partake in inspections, audits, and reviews as required and identified both by TSS and the client
- Will assist in incident investigations as required and directed by leadership
- Shall report and document observations, near misses, and incidents
- Shall activate stop work authority when conditions are of serious and life threatening
- Assist in the training, mentoring and tutelage of employees
- Review, research, revise, rewrite, and document control as directed by leadership Safety Attendant associated Safety Watch documentation
Qualifications
Education:
High School Diploma or GED preferred.
Experience:
Previous experience within Oil & Gas facilities both Sweet and Sour, Leases, Drilling Locations, Construction Projects, Off-Shore, Manufacturing Industry, Off-Road Driving, Winter Driving, Inter-Personal Communication Skills, Ability to Critical Think. – Used to determine the acknowledgment and need to activate the employee within the Short Service Employee Program.
Required Licenses or Specific Training:
- Valid Gov’t issued ID
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license
- H2S Alive - Energy Safety Canada
- Standard First Aid Level C (2 Day in-class)
- CSO (Common Safety Orientation) – Energy Safety Canada
- Fall Protection – Energy Safety Canada
- Confined Space Entry and Monitor- Energy Safety Canada
- Fire Watch - Energy Safety Canada
Other Required Skills, Knowledge, or Abilities:
- Ability to read, write and comprehend English (operational, process, safety and quality instructions and work permits and Plant / Refinery Fire Watch and Fresh Air procedures).
- Ability to quickly grasp training and pass certifications to work in-plant
- Familiarity with plant equipment where work is being performed
- Ability to understand and complete basic mathematical requirements such as addition, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
- Ability to quickly become proficient in the care and use of all site specific, facility required Personal Protection Equipment.
- Must be able to work outdoors in an industrial environment in all weather conditions both hot and cold
- Must demonstrate ability to work in a team environment and willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.
Interpersonal Communications: Ability to read, write and comprehend English (operational, process, safety and quality instructions and work permits and Plant / Refinery Fire Watch and Fresh Air procedures). Must have good communication skills (verbal, written and interpersonal) and have confidence and authority to tell someone that they may not perform work if conditions or procedures are not safe and enact a stop work authority. Contacts with immediate associates and immediate supervisor for instructions, training, and guidance. Frequent contact with customer and job site personnel so communication and interpersonal skills are critical to success.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, climb, stoop, bend, crouch, or crawl. The position will require the use of hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee must be able to occasionally and safely lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus but is not confirmed by mandatory vision exams.
Work Environment
An employee will be introduced to industrial, manufacture, shop, and remote environments and as such will be expected to travel to required locations. Employees will be informed of accommodations as required to meet the need of the assigned projects and or work. This could include remote camps, lodging, and hotel accommodations. Employees should be prepared to be exposed to wet, humid, outside weather conditions (cold/warm), noise, vibration, and congested work areas, exposed to many other industry trades. Employees may be exposed to high pressure, chemicals, gas releases, or fire and that effective mitigation of hazards are implemented. Working within the office environment can also be expected to facilitate administrative roles as required.
Reporting Relationships
Complexity of Duties and Decisions: Employees must follow established operational, process, compliance, safety, and emergency response procedures. Must adhere to specifications and schedule. Work is reviewed for completeness and accuracy, or inherent checks are built into the nature of the work. Most errors are caught during self-inspection or by higher level staff before leaving work unit. Employees shall report always fit for duty and communicate to supervision prior to attending work if unable to accommodate. Stop Work Authority shall be used and communicated to leadership, free of consequence at any time an employee feels an immediately dangerous to life, property, or equipment is imminent.
Authority: Works under close supervision: Works with a supervisor or a more experienced Attendant or Technician to learn the job. After the Short Service Employee Program has been lifted, competency proven, the Safety Attendant / Watch shall start to mentor those around them as valuable and contributing team member.
