Stepping Stones Crisis Society is seeking a Director of Operations who brings experienced and dedicated leadership to oversee daily operations, ensuring the smooth delivery of shelter services, outreach programs, security, facilities management, and more.
The Director of Operations will oversee day-to-day operations across multiple departments, ensuring that Stepping Stones Crisis Society delivers high-quality services in line with its mission to support individuals affected by domestic violence and those in crisis. This role is instrumental in optimizing processes, ensuring regulatory compliance, and promoting operational excellence to support the organization's strategic goals. The Director of Operations will report directly to the CEO and will manage various administrative and support staff.

They offer a range of services, including emergency shelter, counselling, education, and advocacy, all aimed at empowering our clients to overcome their challenges and achieve long-term stability and safety.
Key responsibilities
In this role, you will collaborate with the Senior Manager of Client Care to develop and implement frontline programs that meet client needs and align with our organizational goals. You will be responsible for creating operational policies, ensuring regulatory compliance, and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for both staff and clients. You’ll also play a key role in risk management, emergency response planning, and overseeing facilities maintenance.
Additionally, you will lead and mentor department heads, foster a high-performing team, and manage departmental budgets to optimize resources and improve operational efficiency. Your strategic input will be critical in shaping the organization's long-term goals, including service expansion and infrastructure planning. As part of the leadership team, you will engage with key community stakeholders, representing Stepping Stones at events, building partnerships, and helping drive the organization’s mission forward. Skills and Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Business Administration, Non-profit Management, Public Administration, or a related field is preferred. However, a combination of education, training, and substantial experience in operations and leadership will be considered.
Experience and Skills
- Minimum of two years of progressive experience in operations, administration, or program management, with at least two years in a leadership or supervisory role (experience in non-profit, social services, or a mission-driven organization is an asset but not required).
- Proven ability to lead teams, foster collaboration, and build an inclusive work culture.
- Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to manage complex operations and competing priorities.
- Experience with budgeting, financial planning, and resource management (formal financial training is an asset but not required).
- Adaptability and ability to thrive in a dynamic, evolving work environment.
- Understanding of or willingness to learn legal and regulatory requirements affecting nonprofit operations.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, SharePoint, and other workplace technologies (or a demonstrated ability to learn new systems quickly).
