· Biology 208 – Principals in Ecology (Winter 2025)
Ecology is the scientific study of interactions between organisms and their environment. This course provides an overview of the limiting factors that influence the biotic components of ecosystems, including interactions such as competition and predation, population growth, life strategies, and individual behaviors. The course covers general concepts that can stand alone or serve as preparation for advanced ecology courses. Labs will complement lectures, involving the gathering, analysis, and interpretation of data from ecological experiments and field studies.
· NRES 115 – Fisheries (Winter 2025)
The conservation and management of fish resources depend on a comprehensive understanding of fish ecology and habitat requirements, which vary significantly across latitudinal and altitudinal gradients, as well as between lotic and lentic systems. This course aims to provide practical field experience and academic skills essential for careers in fish culture, habitat and stock assessment, fisheries enhancement, conservation, management, and research. Techniques covered will include passive and active sampling, age estimation through the analysis of cartilaginous structures, health assessment techniques, stream assessment protocols, considerations for Species At Risk, creel survey data collection, and sport and commercial fishery regulations. Field research will be integral, allowing students to collect fisheries data for scientific reports.
