REGIONAL TRAINING & FIRE PREVENTION OFFICER
FULL TIME- PERMANENT | LOCATION: BONNYVILLE, AB
Overview:
Reporting to the Regional Deputy Fire Chief, this multifaceted leadership role is responsible for delivering high-impact training programs, enforcing fire prevention standards, and leading fire investigations across the BRFA. The position plays a key role in shaping the region’s fire safety culture through hands-on firefighter training, public education initiatives, proactive inspections, and emergency response planning. As a Fire Inspector and Trainer, you will oversee fire safety compliance, investigate incidents, support regional emergency preparedness, and ensure firefighters are trained to the highest standards. This role also provides strategic input into fire safety policy development, resource planning, and inter-agency collaboration. Duties and Responsibilities:
Training & Public Education:
- Design, deliver, and evaluate fire safety and emergency response training for firefighters, businesses, and the public
- Coordinate joint training exercises with emergency services, government, and private sector partners
- Maintain accurate training records, certifications, and ensure alignment with local and national safety standards
- Conduct firefighter certification and competency assessments
- Lead public education initiatives in schools, businesses, and community settings
Fire Prevention & Compliance:
- Conduct fire safety inspections for residential, commercial, and industrial properties
- Enforce local, provincial, and national fire safety codes and regulations.
- Advise on installation and maintenance of fire protection systems (alarms, extinguishers, suppression)
- Issue permits for hazardous materials, fireworks, and other fire-related activities
- Develop and lead fire prevention campaigns in collaboration with local authorities
Investigations & Inspections:
- Investigate fire incidents to determine cause and origin; collaborate with law enforcement and insurance investigators
- Produce detailed investigation reports and recommend corrective actions
- Take the role of the Fire Inspector for the BRFA, including inspections of any new construction and review building plans and inspect high-risk facilities for fire code compliance and safety adherence. As a Fire Inspector, this role enforces the Alberta Safety Codes Act, the Alberta Fire Code, and related municipal bylaws
Leadership, Planning & Administration:
- Support development and implementation of regional fire safety policies and emergency response plans
- Oversee budgeting for training, prevention, and investigation initiatives.
- Provide mentorship and leadership to fire service personnel and training officers
- Maintain detailed documentation and reporting on training, inspections, investigations, and prevention efforts
Qualifications and Experience:
1. Education:
- Minimum: High school diploma or equivalent
- Preferred: Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Emergency Management, Public Safety, Occupational Health & Safety, or a related field
- Additional coursework in fire prevention, firefighting tactics, hazardous materials, and emergency response is highly beneficial
2. Professional Certifications (Highly Recommended):
- NFPA 1001 – Standard Firefighter Level I & II
- NFPA 1002 – Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator, 1002 Aerial Operations
- NFPA 1041 – Fire Service Instructor Level I & II
- NFPA Fire Inspector I or II (preferred)
- NFPA Certified Fire Investigator (preferred)
- NFPA 1051 – Wildland Firefighter
- Alberta Safety Code Fire Designation - B2, C2
- HazMat Awareness & Operations (NFPA 472/1072 or equivalent)
- Valid Class 3 Alberta Driver’s Licence with an air brake endorsement
- ICS 300; ICS 400
- ICS 200 Instructor
- CPR and First Aid Certification
3. Work Experience:
- 7+ years of experience in firefighting, fire prevention, or emergency response (preferably within a municipal or volunteer fire department)
- Experience conducting fire safety inspections in residential, commercial, and public buildings
- Previous leadership roles in a fire department, such as Training Officer, Fire Inspector, or Fire Captain
- Hands-on experience developing and delivering fire safety training to volunteers, businesses, and the community
- Fire investigation experience to determine fire origin, cause, and potential arson cases
- Collaboration with local government agencies for fire code enforcement and emergency preparedness planning
4. Skills & Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of NFPA standards & local fire codes (building safety, occupancy requirements, fire protection systems)
- Ability to train and lead volunteers in emergency response and firefighting tactics
- Excellent public speaking & instructional skills – Teaching both firefighters and community members
- Proficiency in report writing & documentation for fire investigations, inspections, and training records
- Strong leadership & organizational skills – Managing training schedules, coordinating inspections, and developing fire prevention campaigns
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with diverse stakeholders
- Physical fitness & stamina – Required for fireground training, drills, and emergency response
